Another paid workout
Duca di Como wins hard held in Sweden
11 Oct 20: Travelling the seven hours by horsebox from Oslo in Norway right down to Malmoe in the south of Sweden may seem a long trek for a workout. Well, when cantering around the track for another Listed win is well paid, why not? Why not indeed. Duca di Como was hard held as he humiliated the best dirt milers in Sweden - once more - to capture the Wikingtryck Peas And Carrots Mile. Jazz Explosion took second, ahead of Red Hot Chili. They both ran well, though never posed a threat. In other words, it was business as usual and 'Duca' remains undefeated on the sand.
Cruised to another 'Nickes' success
Duca di Como first - the rest nowhere!
20 Sep 20: He was once more being backed as if defeat was completely out of the question, and Duca di Como did not disappoint as he cruised home for back-to-back wins in Nickes Minneslopning (LR) at Bro Park. Breaking smartly from stall two under regular rider Elione Chaves, the five-year-old son of Clodovil was in command throughout the 1600 metres contest. He was soon lengths in front, opened up even further going around the bend and never came off the bridle in the homes straight. Most punters had used him as their banker in what was the first leg of the Grand Slam (a popular pick 7 wager) and only those betting on the duo and trippel had anxious moments. The battle for second won by Jazz Explosion, a smart runner who had won his two preceding races. He got the better of Red Hot Chili to secure the next best paycheque. The lion's share, however, a nice 400,000 kronor, went to Stall Como. Duca di Como, by far the best dirt runner in Scandinavia, was winning for the 13th time. Some would argue that performances like this one makes him the best horse around full stop. His earnings have now surpassed 3,3 million kronor. Not bad, for a horse purchased for just 42,000 euros as a breeze up graduate, at Goresbridge in Ireland three and a half years ago. GS
Match Maker completed a nice one-two
Duca di Como impressive on Derby day
23 Aug 20: He is the undisputed champion in Scandinavia on dirt tracks, and Duca di Como is also one of the best on turf – something we saw clearly as he outclassed his eight rivals in the Giant Sandman Polar Cup (LR) over 1370 metres on Derby day. The five-year-old son of Clodovil, as always partnered by Elione Chaves, displayed his blistering speed, shrugged off a challenge from Backcountry turning for home, before quickening right off for an impressive daylight win. Stable companion Match Maker ran on strongly from the back to take second, giving Cathrine Erichsen a fine one-two in one of the most important races of the season.
“He may be better suited by going a bit further than this”, Cathrine said of the progressive runner-up, while admitting that the team has become used to expect a win every time 'Duca' runs. “He has such a mental strength”, Cathrine said after the race, “and he was not happy after losing his last two races”. Asked whether a trip to Dubai in the winter is possible, the trainer replied; “We will see, we do have some plans”.
Pramms Memorial a procession
Duca di Como crushed them - again!
24 May 20: Duca di Como was being backed as if defeat was totally, totally out of the question in the Meccom Group Pramms Memorial (LR). Going off at odds of 1.19, the pressure was certainly on, but his supporters never had a moment's worry. Duca di Como broke smartly from the outside post, went straight to the lead, and ran his opposition into the ground, just like he had done when winning the ITM Spring Mile (LR) over the same course in May. He sailed home to win by open lengths again, nicely wrapped up by a confident Elione Chaves when passing the winning post 8 lengths clear. Red Hot Chili, who was runner-up also in the ITM Spring Mile (LR), got up for second, ahead of Plata O Plomo. The 'right horses' filled the places, in other words, but they had no chance against Duca di Como, described as "the best horse in Scandinavia" by ATG's presenter after the event. He is unbeaten on dirt tracks. His next task will be the Stockholm Stora Pris (LR) at Bro Park next month, when Duca di Como switches from dirt to turf. That outing should be most interesting. Elione Chaves rode three winners on the day, taking him to the top of the riders' list in Sweden.

Duca di Como - by some observers described as the best runner in Scandinavia - dominating in the Meccom Group Pramms Memorial.
Duca di Como - simply different class!
26 Apr 20: Duca di Como produced an astonishing seasonal debut to win the ITM Spring Mile (LR) at Jagersro Galopp. Breaking smartly, he went straight to the lead, was put under a bit of pressure by the second favourite, Dubai winner Plata O Plomo, going down the backstrectch, only to shrug him off as if he were an ordinary handicapper, before drawing away to win the valuable dirt track contest with ridiculous ease under a confident Elione Chaves. He won by 8 lengths, clearly with more up his sleeve. Truth be told, there wasn't a second but for the record; runner-up spot went to Red Hot Chili, while Plata O Plomo paid the price for trying to go with Duca di Como and had to settle for third, beaten 13 lengths. Duca di Como's first big target of the year is the Pramms Memorial (LR) at this venue on May 24, worth 600,000 kronor to the winner.
ITM Spring Mile: Duca di Como first, the rest nowhere
Duca di Como Miler of The Year
1 Feb 2020: Duca di Como was honoured with the title Champion Miler of 2019 as Norwegian racing celebrated their annual champions during a gala dinner at Thon Hotel Oslofjord in Sandvika last Saturday evening. One of the heavies favourites for an award, Duca di Como rounded last year's campaign off with an impressive win in the Peas And Carrots Mile at Jagersro in Sweden - having previously won valuable races also at Øvrevoll and Bro Park. Rated 95 by the handicapper, he is just 3kg below Horse of The Year, Square de Luynes.
